Unlike what Senator Chuck Shumer said on the Senate floor when debating the amount of pork in President Obama's now passed stimulus bill (watch the video entitled American People Don't Care About Pork), you should care. In the latest spending appropriations bill there are almost 5K pork projects which total almost $8 billion. So why should you care? Simple. Accountability and the fact that we are also trying to fund worthier projects.
Now I am not a supporter of bailing out the auto industry. They made their bed years ago and they should lie in it. That's directed at GM and Chrysler and not Ford who made adjustments to their products and strategies years ago. However, I would have rather had President Obama demand that the Democrats (and some Republicans) remove all of these pork projects and take that $8 billion or so and send it to GM.
Look President Obama is going to bail GM out anyway, so why not back up the words in his address to Congress Tuesday and demand the hard spending choices by cutting the pork out and sending them money to GM?
These pork projects are too numerous, total up to too much money, and reward the backroom dealings that we citizens can't stand. Oh, but GM asks for more money and congress puts on a show by grilling them when the amount of money they want magically totals up to the entire pork projects in these last two spending bills? (give or take a few billion). That's why you should care.(BTW - just for the record, I'd rather have no pork and no funding of GM)
